Keeping Safe this Holiday Season
MIDDLETOWN RI, As the holidays approach, the Middletown Police Department would like to encourage everyone to be a little more vigilant during this busy time of year. The Holiday Season is typically a time when we see a spike in property crimes. Below are some tips on how you can stay safe this Holiday Season.
Make sure that the doors to your vehicle are always locked. Thieves will take advantage of unlocked doors making easy entry to a vehicle and taking its contents.
Do not leave valuables in your vehicle. This includes holiday gifts, wallets, money, phones, sunglasses etc… If these items must be left in the vehicle, please keep them out of sight or locked in your trunk or cargo area.
When shopping, park in well-lit areas and be mindful of your surroundings.
For packages being delivered track deliveries online and confirm delivery has occurred. You can sign up for email notifications to track your packages from initial shipment to its arrival at your home, or the recipient’s address if you have the gift delivered directly.
If you know a family member or neighbor will be home, ask them to pick up the packages as soon as they are delivered.
Switch delivery location to work where it can be received by someone and not left on the porch.
See if the post office or delivery service (FedEx, UPS) can hold the package for pick up. The post office will allow your package to remain safe and secure for up to 30 days.
Be careful of scams. Unfortunately, during the Holiday Season thieves will take advantage of people’s good will. If someone knocks on your door, verify that they have a Solicitors Permit from the town or ask for identification. If they can’t answer some simple questions about their charity, call the police.
Leave lights on when you leave the house.
If you notice suspicious activity in your neighborhood, contact the police.
Please check on your elderly neighbors and those that are alone during the year.
And lastly, when celebrating with friends and family this season remember to celebrate responsibly. Using a designated driver or ride share service can save lives. Always buckle up and do not text and drive.
The Middletown Police Department wishes everyone a happy and safe Holiday and New Year.
